La loro massa misurata è sempre risultata di un 20% inferiore alle stime teoriche, alimentando quindi un vero e proprio mistero. Per risolvere il problema occorreva osservare una stella doppia di cui una delle due fosse una Cefeide la cui orbita apparisse "di taglio" osservandola dalla Terra. Tuttavia trovare una stella doppia con queste caratteristiche è sempre stato molto complicato, fino ad oggi. Infatti, nella Nube di Magellano sono state trovate delle cefeidi rispondenti alle caratteristiche cercate di cui si è potuto studiare le regolari diminuzioni di luce generate da esse e causate dal passaggio di una stella sopra l'altra in termini di cono luminoso. Le immagini scattate mostrano uno strano oggetto a forma di "X" come testa di una cometa. Le osservazioni dell'oggetto sono iniziate nel gennaio 2010, ma seguendo l'oggetto per 5 mesi, la Nasa si è accorta che la collisione non era avvenuta da poco, ma da ben un anno circa, nel 2009! Infatti, grazie alle osservazioni prolungate dell'oggetto si è potuto constatare che, contrariamente alle previsioni, i frammenti di materia generati dalla collisione si allontanano tra loro in maniera molto molto lenta. Gli specchi di cui è dotato hanno un ottimo indice di riflessione. Le sue dimensioni sono sensibilmente più grandi dello skywatcher 130/900 anche grazie alla montatura EQ6. La sonda si trova a circa 13 ore luce dal Sole e viaggia ad una velocità di 15.476 km/s ed ha già superato il cosiddetto "Termination Shock", cioè il limite massimo oltre cui le radiazioni solari non hanno più effetto. Una delle macchine più complesse e sofisticate pensate dall'uomo verrà usata ancora una volta, per un ultimo lancio supplementare entro il giugno 2011. La scelta dell'ente spaziale americano ha avuto pesanti conseguenze in termini di tagli di personale. Infatti, circa 1200 dipendenti sono stati mandati a casa e alla fine effettiva del programma shuttle ne verranno licenziati altri 9000. Ma a questo punto, la domanda è... lo shuttle avrà un successore? La sonda ha compiuto un viaggio incredibile, viaggiando a circa 17 km/s (circa 61000 km/h !!!) ed ora si trova nelle profondità dello spazio aperto. Vi assicuro che osservare un oggetto celeste con il telescopio senza sapere cosa si stia osservando... non è molto esaltante! Comunque, anche gli anelli di Saturno... tolgono il fiato! Davvero belli!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Galassie&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"&gt;Ho anche provato ad osservare le galassie più note e visibili, come la M31 Andromeda, ma ancora senza successo. Sarà colpa della troppa illuminazione della zona in cui effettuo le osservazioni.
